| A short history of North Shore Art Society |
|
The North Shore Art Society was formed by Dr Elliot Smith in 1946
at Mosman Sydney. He stood as President for ten years, followed by Mr
Gaden, Mr Fred Goss (Life Member), Miss Yvonne Read (Life Member), Mrs Johanna
Geluk (Life Member), Mr David Cohen, Mr Max Osborne, Mrs Laurette Swanson (Life
Member). All meetings and exhibitions were held at the Mosman Town Hall. Many well known artists were members, and some still are, to name a few: Sir Eric Langker, Allan Hanson, Molly Flaxman, Lionel Lindsey, Richard Ashton, Harold Ashton, Betty Belcher, Harold Hanke, Frank Spears, Fred Goss, Charmian McGregor and Allan Waite. The membership came from the west and south of Sydney and up to Palm Beach, and is the oldest Art Society on the Peninsular. In early 1982 the Society having only one exhibition a year (The Annual), were having financial difficulties with a possibility of the Society folding. President Fred Goss, Secretary Hylda Lane and Treasurer Laurette Swanson decided to continue the Society, arranging interviews with supermarkets, allowing us to exhibit there and other various places. |
We were given permission to paint on the grounds of Quarantine
Station at North Head, Admiralty House and Goat Island. Their endeavours paid
off and once again the Society was solvent. When the Mosman Town Hall was being refurbished, the North Shore Art Society needed to find new premises so the Narrabeen Tramshed became our new venue for workshops and demonstrations. The Society hold at least three Exhibitions a year at various venues. The average yearly membership is between 120 to 130. The Society is a non-profit organisation. |

| Daytime demonstrations 2008 |
|
Many members prefer daytime demonstrations for convenience. As a
result we have trialled three for this year 2008. The well known Northside
artist Johanna Geluk, a member of the Royal Art Society, has already given two
demonstrations in acrylics. Her subject was a Pittwater scene. Her second demonstration involving a still life asked her audience to observe the subject, then remember and sketch after she had covered it! that really tested us as artists! Then Johanna demonstrated how to paint the still life in acrylics. |
We enjoyed a cuppa and chat halfway through the two hour session
(10am - 12 noon) at Nelson Heather Community Centre, cnr of Pittwater Rd and
Jackson Rd Warriewood.
Our next daytime demonstration will be conducted by Johanna on the topic of Portraits. reservations for the Waratah room at the Community Centre must be made to Anne Stormon 9979 2453. The first 20 applicants are the lucky ones! Admittance is $10 and includes morning tea a lucky door prize. |
